Kinja'd!!!

Just looking for some thoughts on home video surveillance from anyone with experience.

I am looking on the short notice part of it here as it is a complete after thought. I am leaving for Italy for 14 days next week. I have a 'friend' who will be staying at the house for me and watching the dog while I am gone. I will also add in that I live in a rather low crime area and we have private security on patrol 24/7 so again, this is pretty much an after thought.

My more immediate need is something I can record and view remotely, god forbid something happened while I was away. While my 'friend' will be staying at the house, he still has a day job, and, while remotely trustworthy, isn't exactly the brightest bulb in the pack. I also doubt he could handle himself responsibly in an emergency situation.

I also feel like it would not be a bad idea to have a camera system at the house so I could have recordings of deliveries (in case one goes missing from the front porch), something that could watch over the garage, and keep an eye on the house, again, just in case.

So, anyone have experience with this stuff? Any recommendations or things to avoid? I don't need top of the line 4k cameras or anything just something that could be remotely usefully in the unlikely event a situation arose.

Have a TZ Zagato for your time:

Although you're probably looking for something cheaper anyway, don't hire ADT. My (security camera) experience with them has been less than satisfactory.

Yea I would be looking for something I could install myself and connect into my network not run some half-ass installed system done by a guy who read the instructions just before he got out of the van.

lorex or q-see units. Blackbox series is good, ive set a few up and they work. Quality is what you expect from $400 bundles.

Simple to set up on both ends, but requires some wiring to make it look nice.

i can get you specific models tomorrow if youd like.

I'm right there with you. If it's going to be half-assed, I will half-ass it myself.

ebay has home security systems for good prices. Usually 4-8 cameras, wiring, a DVR, etc. I've wondered if they were any good, but not sure.

Occasionally I think about installing one just to see what my dogs do all day. My pit is a burglar deterrent - her bark is ferocious - but once they're in the door she'll probably be buddies with the burglar. I don't know where people get their violent pit bulls from, mine fails the break in test.

My dog is the same way (Red heeler). She will make a lot of noise if she dosen't know you but I am pretty sure once your in the house and she sees that you are not cattle (or a rabbit, she loves to chase rabbits around), she would probably just be like "So what are we doing, do you need help carrying that TV out? let me show you where that old coffee can with money is. okay nice meeting you!"
